Located on South Paint Street, the Chillicothe Carnegie Library is constructed in the Dutch style. Chicago architects Patton and Miller designed the library, which was constructed in 1907 with assistance of a $30,000 Carnegie grant. Since then, the library has been expanded three times, each time preserving the historical architecture of the building. A proposed expansion that would have enclosed the entrance in a large, boxy addition was protested by a historic preservation association and was not allowed to proceed. A 1977 project, however, removed the stairs at the front entryway and replaced them with a handicapped-accessible entrance.
Near the entrance to the library is an Ohio Historical Marker commemorating Burton Egbert Stevenson. Stevenson was a journalist, author, and anthologist from Chillicothe. He was also the town’s librarian for 58 years, and was instrumental in securing the Carnegie grant for the town.
