In 1835, Marietta College was chartered. Its library was housed in “Old Dorm” near the center of campus. The library collection migrated from building to building over the decades until the 1900s, when a $20,000 Carnegie grant was secured. “Old Dorm”, the library’s first home, was demolished to make way for the new building. Chicago architects Patton and Miller designed a red brick building with stone trim and terra cotta roof. The building was made up of three floors – basement, main, and second – and featured a stained glass dome and fireproof stacks. The building was opened in June of 1907 and served as the school library until 1961. A massive renovation followed to convert the building for use as an administration building and admissions office. Reopened in 1963, the William Bay Irvine Administration Building continues to serve the college in this function.
