Samuel Pepys was born on 23 February 1633 in a house in Salisbury Court. The plaque records the year of his birth as 1632. This is because before 1752 the year officially began on 25 March, thus February lay in the previous year.

Pepys was an administrator in the British Navy, and wrote a famous diary covering the years 1660 and 1669.
