When I visited I spotted two ot three gargoyles high up on the church tower. There was also a section cordened off at the base of the tower becasue of falling masonary indicating that the weatering process is taking its toll on the tower.
St. Laurence' Church in Meriden dates back to Norman times and is approximately 950 years old. The church notice board records that it was ‘originally founded in the dark forest by a missionary sent out by Lady Godiva nearly a thousand years ago’. The church of Alspath, later to be known as Meriden, was confirmed to the monks of Coventry Priory c.1160 by Ivo de Allespath. The Countess Godiva held the Manor of Alspath, in the time of Edward the Confessor.
