California bay is closely related to the traditional bay laurel (famous for the laurel leaves which crowned the ancient Greek olympic victors). The aromatic leaves of either tree are used in cooking to flavor stews and pasta sauces but the California species is much stronger flavored. In its usual habitat the California Bay is a large rounded shrub or a small tree, but it is widely adaptable. In a location with more moisture it can reach full size tree status.
This particular tree is a giant for its species and is impressive enough to have a city park reserved to protect it and named after it. The spread of its crown is over 120 feet (36 meters).
