Huge hotel, it must have been quite a marvel when built. It is still an impressive building. Hilton just spent $70 million USD on renovations and restoration. They did a fine job. Clean and neat. It takes up almost a whole city block square. LOADS to do within a 2 mile radius. There is alot of history I found on the internet on the Old Heidelberg Hotel. Here is the "official" history I found on Hilton Hotel's website
Hilton Hotel
In a state where every man is a king and a hotel where the past becomes the present, the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center hotel blends both history and elegance. The historic Heidelberg and Capitol House Hotel have been fully restored to their former state of grandeur with over $70 million in renovations. The hotel is adjacent to the Shaw Center and the River Center Convention Center, it is less than five minutes from the Louisiana State Capitol and it is only three miles from Louisiana State University. We are pleased to provide our guests with a smoke-free facility. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle within a five mile radius of the hotel.
Our 290 elegantly appointed guest rooms have been designed with all of the comforts and conveniences of modern hospitality, while maintaining the luster and appeal of the original building facades. The third floor pool and garden deck overlooks the Mississippi River, as do the two river-view ballrooms. The Hilton hotel was a significant part of Louisiana's colorful political history. From Huey P. Long to John F. Kennedy, the hotel was home to American Presidents, glamorous celebrities and generations of weddings, conventions, and loyal business travelers.
Historic Baton Rouge exhibits the warmth of Southern hospitality. From a taste of Cajun Country to the west, to the romance and charm of Plantation Country to the east, visitors to Baton Rouge delight in the seamless merger of past and present. Come experience the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center hotel, where business is a pleasure and a celebration becomes a cherished memory.
The hotel's signature restaurant, The Kingfish, serves the finest prime beef and flavorful Louisiana favorites. A private dining room, The Tunnel, seats 18 and is located in the basement adjacent to the infamous tunnel that Huey Long used to sneak in and out of the old Heidelberg Hotel.
