Poway is a suburb northeast of San Diego, California. It was incorporated in 1980, and the city hall is relatively new. It consists of an office building and a separate city council meeting hall, with a lawn partly surrounded by pergolas, and two sculptures depicting a man and a woman of the Kumeyaay people, the indigenous people of this area. The sculptures were executed in 2004 by artist Johnny Bear Contreras. One depicts a man and is entitled "Creator Hear Me"; the other, a woman resting from her work by a metate (a large stone with depressions in which people would grind acorns, the staple food of this area, into flour).
