After hiding by day with his groups of recruits for the Union Army from Confederate-held Tennessee in the dense undergrowth of White Oak Flats, Captain Dan Ellis passed them into Virginia near here, then crossed North Holston River before ascending Clinch Mountain enroute to Kentucky.
