The Woonsocket Spanish American War Memorial was dedicated May 1925 with a sculpture entitled "The Hiker" by Allen G. Newman depicting an American soldier in uniform of the Spanish-American War and in a nonchalant pose. The plaque below the sculpture is inscribed as follows:

WHO ON LAND AND SEA
DEFENDED/THE NATION'S HONOR
IN/THE WAR WITH SPAIN
AND THE PHILIPPINE
