Ware used to have many coaching inns as it was a day's ride out from London for people heading north and so was a convenient stopping point. A couple of year after the Royal Oakes Inn was opened in 1660 a storm was brewing. Just as a coach turned in to the Royal Oake entrance, a bolt of lightning and thunder clap spooked the horses who just galloped forward past the stables, through the fence and into the River drowning the horses, coachmen and passengers.
Many years later, people sitting in the gazebos (small summer houses) on a misty day have claimed to see horses rising from the river.
Public access?: South of the river is completely open. The area around gazebos is open during the day, but closed overnight.
