The historic Elk Lake Guard Station was built in 1929 and moved to its current location about 1948. Beginning in 1997, volunteers restored the old guard station and now staff it during the summer months providing information about points of interest along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway.
The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway extends for 66 miles from Bend to Ore. Hwy. 58 near Crescent Lake. The route was designated as a National Forest Byway on January 20, 1989, an Oregon State Scenic Byway on February 19, 1997, and as a National Scenic Byway on June 9, 1998.
