The Kentucky State Vietnam Memorial sits on a hill overlooking the state Capitol building and the town of Frankfort, Kentucky. The memorial consists of a huge sundial, the arm (called a gnomon, pronounced noman) of the sundial is over 23 feet long, extends it's shadow across a large square blue-gray granite plaza. The names of 1103 Kentucky citizens who died in the war are engraved on the surface of the plaza. The design of the memorial is such that the tip of the gnomon's shadow touches each name on the correct date of death of that servicemember. In this way each person is remembered and honored with a personal memorial day. On Veterans Day, November 11, at 11:11 in the morning, the exact moment of the end of World War I, the shadow touches the following inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS - THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS"
In front of the base of the gnomon are the names of the 23 Kentuckians who are or were MIA. The names of 10 MIAs whose remains have been recovered have the date of identification recorded next to them. Circling the base of the gnomon are verses Ecclesiastes 3:1 to 3:8.
