Although the statue has 1976 on it the website (visit link) has it listed as 1988. I guess it was made first and then moved to its present location, along the banks of the Cooper River 12 years later.

This is a bronze figure with a polished granite base.Columbus is shown with his right arm pointing to yonder.
Inscriptions on the statue read:

The granite base has the inscription: "CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS".
Below this a bronze plate is attached with the inscription:
ORDER SONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
GRAND LODGE OF NEW JERSEY
[seal]
THE PRESENCE OF THIS STATUE BEARS EVIDENCE OF THE COMMITMENT OF THE
ORDER SONS OF ITALY TO THE ITALIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY.
THE NAMES INSCRIBED HEREWITH ARE THOSE FILIAL LODGES WHO CONTRIBUTED TO ITS PRESENCE ON THIS SITE AND TO THOSE INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED WITH ITS INCEPTION.
VINCENT SARNO
STATE PRESIDENT, OCTOBER 1988
[followed by the names]
The bronze statue has on the side of the base the inscription: "Frank F. Stella 1976" (as already indicated)

Two flags, the Italian and American flags flank the back portion of the concrete base which the statue sits atop. There are a few ornate, concrete benches and attractive flowers and light landscaping which surround the rectangular patio/base of the statue. The brick walkway are comprised of named pavers of individuals who donated money to help defray the cost of this magnificent memorial. Just over a bit is a unique and descriptive terror memorial which is worth seeing.
