USDI-GS (umstamped), VA, is a US Department of the Interior - Geological Survey survey disk located near the old courthouse in Fairfax (City), VA. The disk is mounted flush in the stonework shoulder on the west side of and at the top of a set of concrete steps that lead south from the south side of Main Street up to the sidewalk at the northeast corner of the old courthouse building. It is about 50 feet west-northwest of the southwest corner of the intersection of Mian Street (State Route 236) and Chain Bridge Road (State Route 123), about 31 feet northwest of the northwest corner of a ten-foot tall stone monument that commemorates an early engagement in the Civil War, about 27 feet north of the northeast corner of the building's brick archway, one foot northwest of the black, metal post at the top end of a handrail, and four inches west of the west end of the top of the top step in the concrete steps. To reach from the southwest corner of the above-described intersection, walk west-northwest along the south side of Main Street to the concrete steps leading uphill and south. Turn left and ascend the steps to the top and the disk on the right.
NOTE: This disk is at the described location for station 447 USGS RESET 1960, PID = HV 2733, and may be that station. Benchmark hunter "ArtMan" recovered this no-PID disk on 11/07/2003 and logged the recovery on the Geocaching datasheet for HV2733.
