From a Geneological History of Vermont:
Capt. James Clay who married Lydia Walker was a man of prominence in the Revolution, serving as a captain of a company in the Continental Army and being chairman of the Committee of Safety in 1776.
Before the war he as appointed Vermont's representative to the NY state legislature during the dispute between NY and Vermonters over NY's refusal to recognize land grants from New Hampshire.

Grave Marker Text: Here lies the body of Capt. James Clay. He was born at Chetne New Hampshire and settled in Reboth Massachussets. By his industry he raised a large family, filled many places of public trust with integrity and honor. Purchased in Putney in 1774, he settled his children in easy circumstances and died August 3rd 1798 in the 81st year of his age in full assurance of meeting the joyful welcome. Well done faithful servant enter into the joy of thy Lord.
