The West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc. Station 48 opened in 1971 when the Lanham area was growing and a need for another fire station was needed. Station 48 would become sub station to Station 28 in West Lanham Hills. The station is run by a strong volunteer membership with a career crew during the day. The station serves the communities of Lanham, New Carrollton, Greenbelt and surrounding areas. It also runs first due to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The station houses two engines, Brush Unitm various Chief vehicles, Utility and two Ambulances. The station is part of the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association. Station 48 runs about 3000 ambulance calls this last year.
