On July 3, 1886, this Civil War Monument was dedicated. It stands at the center of the Bedford Public Square, also known as the Bedford Commons. The figure of the Union soldier stands atop the stone and granite pedestal facing forever north. He stands at ease with a firm grip on the 1861 Springfield rifle, representing the many who fought and died in the tragic years of 1861-1865, that this nation might live. He represents the 208 men from Bedford Township who served General Grant's army. Of the 208 names that are engraved on the sides of the monument, 43 died on battlefields and in hospitals during those war years.
In 1886 Independence Day arrived on a Sunday, so Saturday, July 3 was to be the big day in town. In addition to the traditional Fourth of July celebration (a day early) the bright new Bedford Soldiers' Monument would be dedicated.
