This olde worlde station is one of the main ends of this popular tourist railway. It is a pretty station with seasonal flower displays, trains and carriages normally in the sidings and touches such as old cases on the old fashioned carts. There are toilets, a ticket office and the bus depot nearby. Swanage is a seaside town with many shops, a pier and large sandy beach sweeping round the bay.

The Swanage Railway opened in 1885 at this station with the London & South Western Railway Company operating the line from Wareham to here. The line was then closed in 1972 and the track was lifted. This was not for long as the Swanage Railway Society were allowed to move into the disused station and they started to restore the line into the beautiful scenic railway you see today. In 2002 the first train since 1972 ran from Swanage to Wareham and the popular line continues to run from Swanage to Norden regularly with both steam and diesel locomotives, though the line still links up to Wareham. It is run mainly by volunteers.
