The blue plaque says "SITE OF HAY TOWN WELL" This well was situated just outside the Nyport Town Gate. The Warren Conservation Committee 1994."

This well was called the "Town Well", one of seven public wells around the town, superseded in 1863 when Hay Waterworks was formed. The footpath nearby follows the Town Walls towards the Black Lion, site of another town gate. The entire wall on this side of the street is a recent rebuild, after the demolition of 'The Ship Inn' nearby. The Square stonework in the wall is just a mark, the original had a wider stone lintel.
