Hair is the only place where the Norfolk Southern and the CSX meet in Georgia. The tracks come together, then run parallel to each other until they split off again.

This is a very active location. The images presented here were taken in just over an hours time. According to a Wiki article excerpt on Dalton:

"Dalton is a railfan's hotspot, 50 to 55 trains run through Dalton a day, a diamond is located at a place called Hair. Norfolk Southern's Georgia Division (Atlanta to Chattanooga) and the CSX Western & Atlantic Subdivision (Atlanta to Chattanooga) run right through there."

This railfan site is actually three locations all within walking distance or you can drive if you wish.

1. This is where the waymark starts. This is the old freight depot. Plans are for the city of Dalton to restore it and they are looking for ideas on what to use it for. I say a railroad museum and train watching platform! Here you are close to the trains for some action shots. This is also the best place if you wish to remain inside your vehicle.

2. This stop is a bridge, from here you can watch the trains from directly overhead. You get a clear view to the north where the two lines meet and a view to the south of the freight depot and RR crossing. Sidewalks are on both sides of the bridge, but be very careful crossing! Traffic can be heavy here. If you have children, #3 on the stop might be a better choice.

3. This is the upper level to a public parking deck (Free!) and offers great views of the trains. This is not the deck directly next to the number 1. stop above, but a block north of there. If you take the stairs down on the north side of the deck it will lead you to the old CSX tower that stands next to it. This tower is no longer used to dispatch traffic, but it still has as an office and owned by the CSX. Next to the tower is The Dalton Depot. This is the old passenger station that has been converted into a restaurant and lounge, families are welcome. I have not had the pleasure of dinning here, but have been told a model train circles around the entire restaurant.

With the railroad viewing areas, restaurants and shops, you can make a day of it here.

If you have a scanner you'll want to have both NS and CSX channels programed.
NS road channel 160.950, dispatcher to train 160.245, train to dispatcher 160.830
CSX road channel 161.370 dispatcher is 161.520.

See the gallery for more pictures of each of the above locations.
