Thomas died August 26, 1926 in Craig, CO (Moffat County). Thomas was cremated and his ashes were released over the Pacific Ocean. As Thomas was cremated, this is the only grave-marker he has.

From the memorial on site:
The Timber Culture Act signed by President Grover Cleveland encouraged the growth of timber of the western prairies by giving 16 acres of free land for each acre of trees grown successfully. The permit for this tree claim was issues to Thos. H. Iles in 1885. He planted five acres of cottonwood branches laid lengthwise in furrows. He then flooded the furrows.

Barbara A. Iles (1893 - 1995) told the story of the tree claim with pride to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family dedicates this memorial to her.
