In 1962, there was a need for a hospital north of the Peace River, so Bon Secours-St. Joseph's Hospital was opened and ran by the Catholic Church.
The facility has continued to expand over the campus and open extension clinics to serve more of the residents through Charlotte County.
After the turn of the century, FastHealth Corporation purchased the medical facility and renamed it Peace River Regional Medical Center, however it seems that only the name has changed. The Chapel inside the hospital is still in active use, the statue of St. Joseph holding a Christ child still greets visitors by the main entrance, a cross still tops the copper roofing of the Emergency Room entrance and Diocese of Venice clergy still attend to the needs of the patients when they are requested.
In addition to keeping its religious roots, Peace River Regional Medical Center has continued to be the only source for several medical specialties in Charlotte County, securing it as a necessary service for the community.
