"Railroad Square was added to the Register in 1979. The area grew with the advent of the railroad in the 1880s. The impressive basalt buildings bodering the park were made from stoned quarried in the nearby hills. Several of the buildings survived the 1906 Earthquake. Now the district is a busy shopping district." ( visit link)
