Monsignor Anthony W. Sigwarth, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in North Buena Vista, Iowa, during the years of 1937 - 1945 conceived the idea of the "Buena Grotto", planned it, supervised the work done. During his years of retirement he came to North Buena Vista, (known to the locals as BUENIE"} almost every week, weather permitting, to look at the grotto, to make suggestions, and to plan additional shrubbery.

There is a cross on the high hill directly above the Grotto which is lite at night.

Monsignor Sigwarth died in 1985.

A short poem by Monsignor Sigwarth.
-----------------------------------

N ever quite a town so romantic and unique
O n the Mississippi's banks as the town of which I speak.
R ibbons of roadways here converge.
T o form a town where the waters surge,
H ere sighteers, sportmen and villagers converge.

B uena Vista, Spanish for Beautiful View,
U p on green hills and down by the springs!
E everyone here is happy and sings!
N ever complaining of sadder things-
A nd the world loves them for it, too.

V isit the picturesque town's country store.
I n the shade by the river, catch a fish from the shore.
S ee the beautiful grotto, by the road, so fair,
T he church in the village quite beyond compare.
A nd also - there are two taverns there.
