"Mural Project

The above mural is a representation of early industry in Escanaba in the 1800's.

In 1863 Escanaba's primary business interestes were the ore docks, where ore was smelted and made into various grades of steel and iron.

Escanaba was a lake port before it was a railroad terminal. Lake schooners were a prominent aspect of every early day scene. They were the fastest, and safest way to transport freight. The Peninsula Railroad Co. was formed in April of 1862, and by the end of 1863 the railway had been extended from Escanaba to Negaunee and the shipment of ore began. Much of Escanaba's population and economical sucess of that time was due to the early railroads built to and from the town."
