Giant clock to run again on Monday

Time won't be standing still on the South Side for much longer.
The long-stalled hands of the giant outdoor clock at the old Duquesne Brewery will start moving again Monday after a ceremony to mark its renovation, planned for 11:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle supermarket at 2021 Wharton St., South Side. The landmark clock had been stopped at 6:30 for at least 10 years but has been repaired by Equitable Gas Co. and Milan Co., which owns part of the former brewery complex at South 21st and Mary streets.

Equitable's name will be posted on the newly restored and illuminated clock, which is visible from across the Monongahela River. Equitable spokeswoman Cindy Jergan said the utility company opted to renovate the clock because it is a major gas supplier to homes and businesses on the South Side and because it had been seeking options for a sign bearing its name on the city skyline.

"We don't have any other signage in the city. The clock was there, not functioning. It was a good match," Jergan said.

Assisting with the repairs was the Milan family, owners of a development company that owns one of two buildings in the former brewery complex. The other building, now called the Brew House and connected to the clock building by an elevated walkway, is owned by an artists' group.

Jergan would not say how much Equitable paid to repair the clock or place its name on it. She said the utility obtained permission from the city to add the sign to the clock.
