This is another one of Red Shoe’s favorite Waymarks…a penny smasher in a zoo! This smasher is at the Safari Plaza (food court) between the primate and bear enclosures. It has 4 designs: a zebra, a giraffe, a rhinocerous, and an orangutan (see photos). The machine is in excellent condition. The price is 50 cents and your penny.
This machine is labeled "Machine # 4" on the front. There are two other 4 design penny smashers that we have found in the zoo and made Waymarks, but we have not located the third machine. What we called #1 is located by the carousel in the lower section between the escalator and the road underpass. The machine we refer to as #2 is at the lower entrance to the PPG Aquarium. The PPG Aquarium is part of the Pittsburgh Zoo and admission to the zoo covers the aquarium as well. The Zoo is located in the Highland Park area of the City of Pittsburgh. Admission and hours of operation vary with the seasons:
Spring & Fall 9 AM to 5 PM* Adults $12 Seniors $11 Children $10.
Summer 9 AM to 6 PM* Adults $12 Seniors $11 Children $10.
Winter 9 AM to 4 PM* Adults $9 Seniors $8 Children $8.
*Entrance closes 1 hour before closing time.
