The McKenzie Pass Summit is located on Ore Hwy 242 on the Deschutes-Linn County Line. The original road at this location was the McKenzie Salt Springs and Deschutes Wagon Road Toll Road which was constructed from 1866 to 1872. In 1898 the route became a free county road and a state highway in 1917. Reconstruction and improvement of the highway began in 1920 and was completed in late 1925. Today most traffic uses the Santiam Pass and this route is only open during summer months as a scenic route.
