The Union Pacific mainline crosses the Oregon Cascades at Cascade Summit at the west end of Odell Lake. This railline went into service in September 1926 as part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. At Cascade Summit there was a station, siding, and wye. During the 30’s to 40’s passenger trains use to stop at the Cascade Summit Station daily. In 1996 the Southern Pacific merged with the Union Pacific. Today at Cascade Summit, only the siding remains. Two Amtrak trains (Coast Starlight) and numerous freight trains pass here daily. The Yoran Lake Trailhead provides a good parking place and the trail crosses the railroad at this location and enters the Diamond Peak Wilderness.
