Cumberland Coal is located in the Northern Appalachia Region.
Cumberland Coal operates in the Pittsburgh No. 8 Seam in southwestern Pennsylvania. The average seam thickness in the Pittsburgh Seam is six to eight feet.
The Cumberland mining complex has been in operation since the 1970s and is located south of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. The coal mined at Cumberland is processed through a preparation plant, and then loaded onto Cumberland’s private railroad. The coal moves 17 miles to the Monongahela River dock site, where the coal is loaded onto barges for transportation to river served customers or to other docks for subsequent rail shipment.
A portion of the product is also shipped via truck. This diversity in transportation options allows Foundation Coal to reach a wide variety of customers and to provide alternatives to customers when the need arises.
