The bridge was opened in January 1999. It is 60 metres in length, with a suspension of 30 metres and its deck height is 7 metres.
The bridge is named in honour of Joseph Cooper (1796 - 1847) who first farmed the property where the bridge is located in 1836. The farm which was known as Redcliffe Fram grew wheat which was ground into wheat at Cooper's Mill, Yunderup.
Cooper was sadly killed when he was run over by his own bullock wagon whilst making the 46 mile (2 1/2 day) trip to Fremantle.
Cooper's cottage can been seen near the southern end of the bridge.
