Although Regional One is based at Spartanburg Regional, its services are available to all outlying hospitals. If a patient is picked up and needs to be flown to a hospital other than Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, the patient will be taken to the appropriate medical facility. Scene transports will primarily be trauma patients who will be transported to the nearest Level I trauma center, but the air ambulance service will also include hospital-to-hospital transport. This means that outlying hospitals will be able to use Regional One for patient transfers, as well.
By reducing emergency response times to outlying areas, Regional One has greatly extended the reach capabilities of Spartanburg Regional within Spartanburg and surrounding counties. Regional One is a collaborative effort between Spartanburg Regional and Med-Trans Corporation and provides medical helicopter service to Spartanburg, Cherokee, Laurens, Polk, Union and Rutherford Counties, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Regional One is a Bell 407 helicopter, a model with a strong record of reliability and safety. Helicopter features include a state of the art communications system, a 15 million candlepower Star Burst SX-5 lighting unit to ensure safe landings to and take-offs from nighttime landing zones, a bi-fold door for quick and easy patient loading and unloading, as well as an extensive array of the latest medical equipment and supplies.
This is the second helicopter with the designation of "Regional One", the first one went down on July 13, 2004 during a patient transport. The pilot Bob Giard, 41, flight nurse Glenda Tessnear, 38, and paramedic David Bacon, Junior, 31 and a patient were killed.
