Lorain County was created from parts of Huron, Cuyahoga and Medina Counties in 1824. The Renaissance styled Lorain County Courthouse was built beginning in 1879 and completed in 1881 replacing an earlier courthouse. The massive sandstone building continues to serve as the courthouse though a new justice center has been built nearby.
