Custer County, a large county in the geographical center of Nebraska was organized in 1877. It includes both corn belt and cattle production areas.
The present courthouse, constructed in 1911, replaced an 1899 ornate red brick building that was destroyed by fire in 1910. The architect,
John Latenser, designed several other Nebraska courthouse. The courthouse occupies a square in downtown Broken Bow. It was one of the first fireproof structures in central Nebraska.
The courthouse was placed on the National Historical Register in 1979.
