In the city's riverfront park is a three-part sperm whale, partially covered with ceramic tiles which appear to have been individually created and contributed.
The Parks & Recreation Department couldn't give me any specifics as to the who and when; I am awaiting a response from the City Historian in the mayor's office.
As for what it represents, having grown up in Poughkeepsie, I was surprised to find out that it was at one time a significant whaling port. Surprised, considering how far up the Hudson River the city sits (70 miles north of New York, give or take). Two whaling companies, Poughkeepsie Whaling and Dutchess Whaling, were based here. This park is where the docks were.
