Glen Echo Park opened in 1891 as an idealistic attempt to create a National Chautauqua Assembly "to promote liberal and practical education". Instead it became the area's best amusement park, open from 1898 through 1968. It has come full circle and is again used as a center for arts education, run jointly by the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture and the National Park Service.
One building remains from the original 1891 school. The remainder are amusement park structures that have been restored to the art deco style they were changed to by the park in the 1930's. The Arcade, Dentzel Carousel, and the Spanish Ballroom (featuring nightly dancing and dance lessons with live music) have all been restored. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
