Natural Bridge has long been a favorite tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. The Natural Bridge was visited by both Union and Confederate soliders while passing through the Blue Ridge province in Southern Virginia.

Natural Bridge was considered to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Bridge was first surveyed by George Washington in 1750 and later purchased by Thomas Jefferson in 1774. It is still privately owned but can be visited by purchasing tickets ($13 adult, $8 child).
Civil War Significance:
In the spring of 1864 Union General David Hunter set out to destroy the vital Confederate transportation routes and food stocks in the Shenandoah Valley. This campaign, known as Hunter's Raid, was part of General U.S. Grant's strategy to launch coordinated simultaneous attacks on Rebel strongholds throughout the Old Dominion. After burning the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Hunter set out to destroy the transportation hub and Confederate hospital center in Lynchburg. During their march toward Lynchburg, the Natural Bridge was visited by some of Hunter's troops who detoured to see this famous attraction. This delay may have allowed General Jubal Early to arrive in Lynchburg just in time defend the city. After repulsing Hunter in the battle of Lynchburg on June 18th, Confederate soliders also stopped to visit the enchanting Naural Bridge before turning North and heading up the Valley towards Washington, D.C.
