This abbey was the first Cistercian founded in Wales. The ruins that are currently visible were built over a four hundred year period, from 1136 to 1536.
The abbey continued serving the community during those 400 years, even during times of plague and warfare. It wasn't until King Henry VIII took control of the church within the UK that the abbey's religious service came to an end.
In 1536 the abbey was surrendered to the crown, and the building was given to The Lord of Chepstow. The building's roof was removed and sold off. Thus began the abbey's slow decay.
Most of the above information was taken from Wikipedia, and according to them the abbey was the inspiration for Willliam Wordsworth's poem "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey".
