A BROKEN DREAM
In 1904, Jim Hill's Great Northern reached the Pacific at Moclips. For the first time people from population centers could reach these ocean beaches by rail. Recognizing a need, Dr. Edward Lycan opened The Moclips Beach Hotel in 1905. Over 5,000 people visited Moclips on weekends. The hotel burned down in its first year. In 1907, it was rebuilt with 270 rooms. In 1911, the new hotel fell victim to the sea in the biggest storm on record. Dr. Lycan's dream of a Moclips was washed away.
