This Cut Bench Mark is on the front of this Church in Lewes High Street.
St Michael’s church is one of only three remaining churches in Sussex with a circular tower. Dubbed ‘the church of the castle’ and ‘tanquam Matrici ecclesie’ (Mother church), it is believed to have been regarded as the ‘senior’ church of the town and the most closely linked with Lewes Castle. Sitting at the foot of the mound of the Norman castle, St Michael's combines fine architecture with modern amendments. Much of the church was rebuilt in 1748, in a Georgian style, due to the poor condition of the building.
