Founded in 1785 (though not a daily newspaper until 1860), the Journal is the oldest paper in New York State and the third oldest in the nation.
The editor of the Journal was the official reporter for New York when the state ratified the United States Constitution in 1788. The paper also served as the launching point for stories when President Franklin D. Roosevelt was at his estate in nearby Hyde Park.
