Long before the Spaniards explored this land, the ancient Puebloan people inhabited this area, sustaining their numbers with hunting and gathering.
The Anasazi Cultural Center, an important stop for information on the Trail of the Ancients is a great starting place. The museum has numerous displays and hands-on demonstrations of the life of the puebloan people, who inhabited the area until about 1300 AD.
Not only are the volunteers here very informative, but the Cultural Center also has the best information and maps of the area and the Trail of the Ancients.
The Esclanate Pueblo Ruin is on the cultural center's grounds. We visited the museum, then took the 1/2 mile trail behind the center to the Escalante Ruin. The pueblo consists of 28 rooms and a kiva. There is evidence that some of the rooms were used as living quarters, signifying that this was not just used as a gathering spot, or storage.
The archeological evidence points to an occupation of a different culture in this pueblo around 1150 AD, and yet another around 1200 AD...ending the use of this pueblo.
