A 5,400-acre preserve sheltering one of the best examples of ridgetop dwarf pine barrens in the world.

This visit introduced my sons to Sam's Point; they thus became the fourth generation of my family to connect with this place.

It is especially significant to me because my grandfather was the foreman of the Civilian Conservation Corps crew which built the fire roads on the ridgetop. From childhood into my teens, I would come here with my parents for a day each summer (we lived only an hour away); they would pick wild blueberries while my friends and I explored the Ice Caves.

Is there a trail system?: Yes

If there is a trail system, please describe length, terrain, etc.:
Over 10 miles, mostly over flat terrains, some involving light climbing through crevices and along cliff trails. These are mostly eased with rocks laid as steps and log ladders.


What points of interest are there?:
Views from the highest point in the Shawangunk Ridge (2,289 ft), VerKeerderKill Falls (180 ft), Lake Maratanza, ice caves.


What activities are available?:
None

Cliffs, and rattlesnakes are known to inhabit the northernwestern slopes

$7 parking when the nature center is open, otherwise no charge.
