Mt. Tammany is the southernmost peak of the Kittatiny Mountains in New Jersey. It is within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and lies alongside the Appalachian trail.

It is immediately opposite Mt. Minsi in Pennsaylvania and they are seperated by the Delaware River. Route 80 runs alongside the river here and provides easy access to Mt. Tammany. Parking can be found at N 40.97135 W 075.12429.

To climb Mt. Tammany you can take the red dot trail straight up, this is a moderate hike in good weather but will be somewhat more difficult during/after rain or snow. There are a lot of rocky areas that will be VERY slippery if wet. You won't fall off the mountain....but depending on where you are exactly you might have a good ten to twenty foot slide. Wear sturdy footwear and watch your footing.

The red dot trail will take you right up about 1530 feet to the summit. Once there you can either return the way you came.....or follow the red dotsacross the summit to where they end. the red dot trail ends where the blue trail begins. You can make it a loop hike by following the blue trail back down. This loop will make the hike approximately 3.5 miles total.

If you follow the blue trail back down you will eventually cross a footbridge and the blue trail then meets up with the Appalachian trail. (Just before the footbridge there may or may not be a small waterfall on your right, behind a park bench...it dries up sometimes). If you are interested, there are Geocaches and Letterboxes in the area, as a matter of fact you'll pass at least two letterboxes on this loop.

After the blue trail meets up with the Appalachian trail, they both descend down to a parking lot. It is probably not the lot you parked in, but as you walk into the lot, by the hand pump well, just walk across the lot and take the 'stairs'. you'll quickly be back where you started and just a small walk down to your vehicle.

Obviously, you can do this in reverse. Follow the more moderate blue trail up and then came back down the red dot trail.

Either way the views at the top are great. Unfortunately the road noise from route 80 is still somewhat audible up there, but the hike and views are well worth it.

Altitude in Feet: 1530
