Donald C. Davidson, first librarian of UCSB, served from 1947 to 1977. His papers are collected at the library. In 1966/1967, he traveled to the University of Sheffield on a Fulbright scholarship. Jay Monaghan, author of the 1971 book "Custer: The Life of General George Armstrong Custer," said that "Davidson has been exceptional helpful in response to my numerous requests."
  • A plaque outside the Davidson library credits him with bringing the "Library into the World of Distinguished Research Libraries".
