The Episcopal Church first came to Punta Gorda by request of Virginia Trabue, pioneer and the wife of Col. Isaac Trabue, in 1886. St. James mission was promptly established.
Mrs. Colt donated the Tiffany Chancel Window of the Good Shepherd and requested the name be changed to Church of the Good Shepherd shortly after the tragic drowning of her son Caldwell in the Charlotte Harbor in that same year. In 1896, Bishop Gray consecrated the new church under the new name.
The window is still in the Chancel for visitors to enjoy but is not visible from or vulnerable to the outside.
