Hero Grove is a public memorial presented by the city of Augusta in 1920. It is a tree-filled median running for several blocks on Central Avenue in Augusta, Georgia's historic Summerville neighborhood. It begins at Troup Street and ends at Monte Sano.
The public memorial is marked by a plaque erected in 1920 by the Richmond County Federation of Women's Clubs. The plaque at the east end by Troup Street, reads:
"Hero Grove/In Memoriam/Soldiers, Sailors, Marines,/of Richmond County and Augusta, GA,/Who Gave Their Lives In/The World War/1917-1919"
68 names are listed, including a column titled "Colored". Stars and dagger symbols are used to denote those killed in action and those who died in service.
"These Trees Presented By/The City of Augusta/This Tablet Erected By/The Richmond County Federation of Women's Clubs, 1920."
The plaque is in the grassy median in the middle of a busy residential road. Parking is available on side streets and at nearby businesses. Be sure to use caution, attending to children and using the available traffic signals.
