The Greater Columbus Convention Center is situated primarily along High St. in downtown Columbus, Ohio. It is owned and operated by SMG Property Management based in Philadelphia, PA.
The convention center was opened in 1993, and was designed by Peter Eisenman. Soon after its opening it was heralded by the convention industry as one of the best centers in the U.S. Because of the overwhelming response, they were forced to expand in 1999
The building itself is considered by some to be ugly. Eisenman's original design couldn't be executed exactly as planned due to budget restrictions. The front of the building shows various sections of different dimensions, and various pastel colors, appearing like a row of separate buildings. The top, as viewed in an aerial photo, shows wavy lines extending from the front to the back. This was done to resemble railroad trains. The building sits on and near land that was once the Columbus Grand Central Station. This design was used to hint back to the history of the area.
Many events are held here throughout the year, including the Columbus Auto Show, and the Origins Game Fair.
