A plaque on the wall of 122 S. Main explains that this building was the former Hiram Lodge 118. If they had posted this there would have been no way to know the history of this building.
"Before Edward Gut began selling leather goods in 1865 at 122 S. Main St. in St. Charles, the local Masons Lodge had constructed the building in 1849 for its meeting place.
But the lodge had its last meeting on July 17, 1861, barely three months after the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter. The epithet for Hiram Lodge 118 now hangs in a plaque placed on a brick wall by the Historic Downtown Association:
"We came under the dark cloud of War between the North and the South, and Hiram No. 118 with a membership of 73 was not strong enough to withstand its horrors and like many lodges of the Border States, it passed out of existence." (
