The Hatchery was first built in 1933 by Monroe County to support the area sport fishery and eventually went private in 1992 becoming the Powder Mill Fish Hatchery, Inc. Facing closeure and bulldozing in 2002, it was acquired, through the efforts of John Riedman, and preserved. Today it is supported by the Riedman Foundation as a Non-Profit entity.
Located within the Powder Mills Park, it is open to the public and free of charge.
The fish raised here are mainly Brown and Steelhead Trout, with some Chinook Salmon. The are raise from eggs obtained from the county and are released into the Park and the near-by Irondequoit Creek.
